As a first grade teacher, I often receive gifts from my students during the holiday season. I am so grateful to my families for even doing this--especially during such hard economic times. While it feels like our economy is building itself back up, I have to share the story of how I acquired this little village.
You see I have always had a fascination with the Christmas villages you see throughout the stores during the holiday season. In fact, I started my own collection about 12 years ago. I loved it very much, but was very frustrated with how much room it took to display it. I would bring it out every year and struggle to find just the right place. When we moved to our current home, I simply could not find a place to display my village, so I donated it, with a heavy heart mind you, to our local Goodwill.
Then something magical happened last year. As I was opening one of the gifts from my students, I received this--
a Christmas village building.
It appears to be a church, but with the bell I wondered if the child that gave it to me thought it was an old school house. Either way, it just didn't matter. You see, I love Jesus so much, and I know He put a passion for teaching in my heart. To many this would be a silly gift, but to me it meant so much. It honored my love for Jesus, as well as my joy for teaching. But the best part of this building was that it was a miniature version of the villages I have loved for so long. It really brought joy to my heart to have one small piece to remind me of the peace I feel when admiring these imaginary towns.
Well, the story does not end there. As I was wrapping up my own Christmas shopping last year, I stopped by our local dollar store to pick up a few odds and ends. (I just love the bargains I can find there!) Well on one of the end caps, I happened to see my church/school. I couldn't believe my eyes. Not only did they have my church/school, but they had so many other meaningful buildings.
The bookshop.
My passion for teaching children how read is something I will never be able to fully explain. I gave that up long ago!
The Train Station.
This makes me think of my grandmother, Betty B. Her grandfather, Grandpa Barclay, was a train conductor in a time that probably looked much like this village scene.

The Pet Store.
Oh, how could I not pay tribute to Lilly and Quinn in my little village. These two dogs have added so much joy (and a little frustration) to our family's life in the country.
The Toy Shop and Gift Shop.
What village is complete without a toy shop for the children and a gift shop for the grown ups? Besides, everyone knows how much I love to shop!

The Church.
Since the original building was up in the air for me, I needed to be certain to have a place to honor Jesus!

I can't even begin to share the joy I felt stumbling across these 3 inch gems. And the fact that it fit well into our budget made it that more special. A whole whopping six bucks to make my heart feel larger is really priceless!
Well fast forward to this holiday season, and another trip to our local
dollar store. This year, I happened to find the miniature people and
accessories that complete our village. The village is now complete and I
can sit and enjoy this magical scene. For me, it's a reminder to
slow down during this Christmas season and enjoy the simple things in
life. Listening to a great advent sermon to guide my week ahead.
Strolling the streets looking for the "perfect" gift for a loved one.
And just taking time to enjoy family and friends.
But the absolute best part of this village is that it fits neatly onto one shelf of our TV cabinet. No more struggling to find a home for something I enjoy so much.
A very Merry Christmas Village that will be enjoyed for many years to come!
